Go to newsEL joins the international campaign against the outlawing of abortion in Poland
The President of the Party of the European Left (EL), Pierre Laurent, and its vice-presidents Maite Mola and Marisa Matías have already signed the campaign against the prohibition of the abortion in Poland launched byYou move Europe and which can be signed at the EL website www.european-left.org
The Polish legislation, which is already the most restrictive of Europe, is going to harden in order to prohibit the abortion in all the assumptions, including the cases of rape. The women who abort might go to jail, as well as health workers participating in such abortions. Only women with serious risk to their health would be exempt.
The vice-president of the Party of the European Left, Maite Mola, has stated that we are not talking about a problem of solidarity but of the defense of freedom. “The right to abortion of women and the right to decide about maternity is a fundamental right that must be exercised without interferences, conditions, tutelages, or penalizations”.
The EL has already started a European campaign for the right to free abortion and put it out of the criminal code, when the Spanish Government was working on a bill to restrict this right. The great mobilization and the national and international citizen pressure achieved that the responsible Minister had to withdraw the draft law and resign.
The EL will continue to defend the right of women to a free abortion wherever they are. Focusing on Poland Maite Mola was categorical: "If they attack a Polish woman they attack all of us”.
